This was a self initiated project: we wanted to create a functional work surface, where we could present, discuss and deliberate predominantly visual materials.
We were using glass tabletop surfaces for our desks, and decided that glass would be an appropriately hardwearing and practical material. Its obvious transparency together with influences gained through working in exhibition design, led us to a solution based on the principle of a display case.
With a brief to find graphic design related objects of interest and appeal that we could display, we sourced some attractive letterpress wooden printing blocks: a full alphabet and more, from 25 different fonts for our new ‘type table’.
We then engineered a suitable method for floating the bespoke cut and drilled glass top, over the cluster of letterpress type using oak standoffs, to provide a useful and effective feature piece.Other projects
